Video FAQ: Trimming Monte Carlo & Maintaining Easy Aquarium Plants
Q: How do you trim a Monte Carlo "tree" in an aquarium?
A: The best way is to remove the tree from the tank and trim it outside, using curved aquascaping scissors. This prevents loose leaves from making a mess in the aquarium. You can trim Monte Carlo aggressively—it grows back quickly.
Q: Can I re-use Monte Carlo trimmings?
A: Yes! The cuttings can be replanted in your substrate to start a Monte Carlo carpet. Trimming essentially turns your plant into a “Monte Carlo factory.”
Q: Where should I avoid trimming Monte Carlo?
A: Avoid cutting too far into the dense top layer. Trimming there often causes browning or weaker regrowth. Stick to trimming from the bottom and sides.
Q: What conditions does Monte Carlo need to grow well?
A: It thrives under moderate light with added CO₂. It can adapt to lower light with slower growth, but CO₂ helps it spread faster and maintain lush growth.
Q: What’s the benefit of growing plants on removable wood or hardscape?
A: Being able to lift out the whole plant ball or wood makes trimming and tank maintenance much easier. You can clean the aquarium without disturbing the plants too much.
Q: Can Java fern be trimmed?
A: Yes. Remove older, melting, or black leaves by cutting them at the base. Java fern spreads naturally by growing along wood or rocks, so trimming helps thin it out and keep a tidy look.
Q: How do you attach Anubias or Java fern to rocks and driftwood?
A: Use a thick gel superglue, applying it sparingly. Make sure not to cover the rhizome (the thick horizontal stem), since that’s the lifeline of the plant.
Q: Do these plants require CO₂?
A: Monte Carlo benefits greatly from CO₂, while Anubias, Java fern, and many crypts grow well without it as long as they have consistent lighting and a clean tank.
Q: What’s a good filter choice for guppy tanks?
A: Sponge filters are ideal because they provide gentle filtration and won’t suck up fry. Floating or hanging plants also help give fry safe hiding spots.
Q: Can Bettas live in community aquariums?
A: Yes, in the right conditions. The video features a Samurai Betta living peacefully with other fish. Just be sure to provide a lid, since Bettas are jumpers.
Q: What is an aquaponics system and how does it work with aquariums?
A: An aquaponics system uses aquarium water to feed edible plants like basil, strawberries, or peppers. Fish waste supplies nutrients for the plants, and the plants help filter the water—creating a sustainable cycle.
