Why Use a UV Sterilizer?

A UV sterilizer is a valuable tool for an aquarium, using ultraviolet light to effectively combat harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and parasites. This not only diminishes diseases but also tackles the issue of free-floating algae and bacteria that cause green and cloudy water. Their efficiency can potentially mean a reduced dependency on medications, especially beneficial when introducing new inhabitants to the tank. Importantly, this method is chemical-free and doesn't alter the aquarium's water chemistry.

 

Maintenance

For optimal performance, replace the bulb annually. This is crucial even if the light remains functional, as its emitted spectrum may shift over time, potentially decreasing efficacy. To maximize the UV light's efficiency, clean the quartz sleeve every few months to prevent buildup, ensuring unobstructed light exposure to the circulating water.

Hi, I am considering getting one of the 40w UVs for my Cade 1800 (~220g total water volume) for dinos. I have a Sicce 1.0 (251gph) pump that I was thinking of using - would this be feasible? If so, what plumbing/fittings would I need to get to plumb using flexible tubing?

Thank you for your question. I believe a DC controllable pump with a gate valve would be more efficient for use with a UV sterilizer to adjust flow according to changing needs of the aquarium over time. The standard AC pumps with a singular flow rate can be dialed back but also use more electricity when using a gate valve to slow them down. The Sicce 1.0 is on the lower end of the acceptable flow range for this UV unit and with head loss and chamber size on the UV unit, it may not be able to perform as expected. You may want to check out a VarioS-2 pump or a little larger depending on what you would like to control in the aquarium. The VarioS-2 comes with a 1" slip pvc union, while the UV comes with a 1.5" pvc union. For the tubing SKU:210943, clamps sku:203072, reducer on the UV sku: 209997 (qty 2), barbs sku: 209983 (qty2), for that Varios pump(or any pump with 1" pvc connection to barb fitting sku:207927. You will need to determine how much tubing you will require to operate it depending on the installation location, but that should get you started.

Are the 1 1/2” intake and outputs threaded or slip fit? I’m planning on hard piping it to 1” pvc and need bushings to pipe it.

Hello, does your 1.5" union ( SKU 202522) fit the threaded flange on the pentair aquatics smart uv 40 watt (SKU 204905)? I plumbed a 1/2" reducer into the inlet/outlet, attached a sicce 1.5 and noticed the max flow is 80 GPH per my neptune 1/2" flow sensor. I need to re-plumb to 3/4" to see if I can increase to the recommended flow. Sorry if this is a duplicate question. I submitted a question last night, but don't remember adding my email address, so that is why I'm posting the question again. Thank you.

Unfortunately our unions will not fit the Pentair UV units. You will need to reach out to them to see if you can obtain a replacement directly.

Hey there,

It can be reduced but not recommended. That would drastically effect the flow rate by reducing more than 50%, putting a ton of back pressure on your pump.

We do carry surface mounting clamps that can be used with the Pentair UV sterilizers. The 40w version does have a 3” body and the 3” mounting clamps will work with that sterilizer.

I have the unit mounted horizontally with the input and outlet positioned downward. But the chamber only fills 1/4 of the way with water. Is this correct, or should it be filled all the way. Or do I have it positioned incorrectly? Not enough room to position vertically

Hey there,
You will always want to position or plumb the outlet so that the water will fill the reaction chamber completely. The outlet should be at the highest point possible. If you are unable to point the outlet up, you should plumb the outlet so that is goes above the UV reactor in order to prevent the chamber from emptying.

I've read that UV sterilizers can kill copepods and other beneficial critters, is that true? And if so can I run a UV sterilizer at a higher flow to keep algea at bay but not kill the good guys?

Great question! Most beneficial creatures like amphipods, copepods, and beneficial bacteria do not live in the water column itself. They live in the pores and crevices of the rock and sand and the vast majority of them will not flow through the system and end up in the UV sterilizer. It is possible for a few to make it through, but it will not completely wipe out the entire populations. :-)

Great quesiton! You will need to purchase a feed pump with a flow rating around 160 GPH/300 GPH, as well as the plumbing needed to connect to this product's inlet and outlet. The inlet and outlet plumbing sizes are 1½" Union. :-)

Great question!
The sicce 1.0 will work well with no head height. From there if there is back pressure or head height restricting the pump we recommend the sicce 1.5

I thought you need to plumb the UV so that ALL water returning to tank from sump should flow through the Unit. But all of the set ups I have seen on You Tube show the UV being fed from separate pump in sump with water flowing through the UV and back to the sump? Doesn't sump-to-sump set up significantly decrease the effectiveness of the UV?

Great question!
With these UV sterilizers in particular they will run on slower flow rates and increased water contact time. In most cases you will not need to return the water up to the tank but simply by drawing the water from an earlier section in the sump to a later section of the sump will improve performance. While ideally a full UV sterilizer could work the current set up with a feed pump works great on al of our units! Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

I'm curious to know if 40 watts is too much for 150 gallon reef tank? Can you have too much wattage to gallons? I just want to make sure anything that passes through it gets nuked. Let me know what you think.

Great question! With UV sterilizers it is almost impossible to "oversize", 40 watts should be great on a 150 gallon system :)

This certainly can be used with existing manifolds very easily. The unit will come with appropriate barb fittings to connect to 3/4" soft tubing. additionally you can use hard plumbing to connect the sterilizer. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
