Unmatched UV Sterilizer Performance

  • For Aquariums up to 130 Gallons
  • Effective Against Bacteria and Water-Borne Algae Blooms
  • Design Maximizes Effective UV Contact Time
  • Multiple Sizes Available

Pentair Aquatics is a well-known player in the aquarium UV game and for good reason. Their long history of producing top-notch equipment for our aquariums is hard to match. Their Smart UV Sterilizers are robust, reliable, and most importantly effective.

Why Use a UV Sterilizer?

A UV sterilizer is a valuable tool for an aquarium, using ultraviolet light to effectively combat harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and parasites. This not only diminishes diseases but also tackles the issue of free-floating algae and bacteria that cause green and cloudy water. Their efficiency can potentially mean a reduced dependency on medications, especially beneficial when introducing new inhabitants to the tank. Importantly, this method is chemical-free and doesn't alter the aquarium's water chemistry.

Maintenance

For optimal performance, replace the bulb annually. This is crucial even if the light remains functional, as its emitted spectrum may shift over time, potentially decreasing efficacy. To maximize the UV light's efficiency, clean the quartz sleeve every few months to prevent buildup, ensuring unobstructed light exposure to the circulating water.

Minimum Operational Flow Rate: 79 GPH

Maximum Operational Flow Rate: 788 GPH

hard plummed and glued in for a 3/4 barb but now i want to hard plumb it into my system, do you have replacement unions that i can buy to replace the unions i glued barbs into?

Great question, we do not carry those.

The Pentair 25 Watt UV is specked at 3.5 inches width of main body tube. A year 2017 answer to a similar question of what size of clamp support to use responded with the answer being a three inch clamp. Either that is a curious answer or this model Pentair UV has changed since then.

If planning to use:

https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/sm-clamp-for-pvc-pipe.html?queryID=5dbd52eaf96dd49dd21de9737c69b890&objectID=3400&indexName=brs_prod_m2_default_products

clamps, would the three inch have plenty of extra space on the ratched for 3.5 inches? (If so why is it called a three inch?) Or, does the four inch ratchet down to 3.5 inches? Perhaps a better question would be what are the ratchting size ranges of both the three inch clamp and the four inch clamp?

Thank you

The clamps are labeled in accordance to what sized PVC tubing they fit. We have clamps specifically designed for these UV sterlizers and I recommend these clamps much more as they are way more stable.

I'm having a hard time finding the correct flow rate for dinoflagellates. Do I want to run it on the algea/bacteria "high flow 472 GPH" or the protozoa "low flow 79GPH"?

These are the suggested flow rates found on the BRS site for this uv sterilizer.

Hey there,
Thank you for reaching out to us. You will want to use the faster algae rate for Dinos.

Please let me know if you need anything further and take care!

What pumps would you recommend based on the suggested algae sterilizing flow rate?
Question by: Jeff on Nov 18, 2021, 9:29 AM

Hello, thanks for the question, when picking a pump for a UV sterilizer it's important to consider the pump's head pressure depending on the location of the UV and the Pump, if your aquarium is between 100 and 130 gallons I would chose between a Sicce Syncra 4.0 and EFlux 6009 DC Flow Pump. Feel free to contact us directly via email at support@bulkreefsupply.com and we will be more than happy to assist you further.

What size hose barb fitting would I need to order with this UV sterilizer?
Question by: Matt Rogers on Apr 30, 2020, 11:45 AM

Hi Matt,

I would plumb the UV sterlizer with tubing no smaller than 3/4" tubing to avoid excessive back pressure on your pump and the resulting flow loss.

I hope this helps!
Happy Reefing

I plan on using this in my main display tank, even though I will quarantine all fish & dip all corals, so what rate flow would you recommend for preventing any sort of diseases or outbreaks in my main display tank for prevention?
Question by: Richard on Jun 6, 2017, 5:05 PM

To get a reliable kill rate on disease organisms such as protazoans and bacteria, you'll want to have a maximum flow rate through this unit of 130gph. Typically the goal is to have the tank volume run through the sterilizer at a rate of about 1x per hour, so these two factors will determine the proper size of UV to get for your tank.

Happy reefing!

What size pcv pipe holder will I need to secure this sterilizer?
Question by: david brennom on Jun 16, 2016, 7:16 AM

Great question,
You will need the 3" PVC pipe clamp. This will be a slightly loose fit however will hold the Sterilizer perfectly! Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Do you guys have any research on what, if any, impact the use of UV has on ORP? I am seeing some suggestions that it can potentially boost ORP and am a bit curious if it would be worthwhile to have my ORP sensor control when to run the UV.
Question by: Eric on Mar 29, 2016, 2:35 PM
0
Great question!
Unfortunately we have not looked into UV's effect on ORP. We still us ORP in conjunction to keep consistent levels when dealing with Ozone however UV should not have the same impact as Ozone on ORP levels. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

What is the difference between the Smart UV 25 watt and the 25 watt lite. I see that the lite is rated for a 90g while the other is 130g. Why?
Question by: Jeremy on Mar 27, 2016, 1:56 PM
0
Great question!
The difference will lay on the size of the water to flow through the reactors. The Lite is a smaller design with less contact time for the water. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Do you stick or recommend where I can get the right pipe clamp support to mount this model?
Question by: Rory on Jan 26, 2016, 6:01 PM

Great question!
We do not have the mounting option for the UV sterilizer for sale however it may be available through the manufacturer directly. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Of the 2 water flow rates(algae+bacteria or protozoa), which would be the more appropriate for controlling dinoflagellates?
Question by: Marc on Jan 23, 2016, 9:03 PM
0
Great question!
The best flow option would be the Bacteria, Algae flow as this will not help to sterilize established algae or Dino but rather will keep free floating forms in the water column from reproducing. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Will this kit provide me with everything I will need or do I need to get a pump, tubing, etc...? I am Fairly new at the hobby and hadn't used a UV sterilizer before.
Question by: Chris DeLaro on Jan 17, 2016, 3:54 AM

Great question,
This will not come with any of the plumbing supplies. However this can be plumbed in to make it barb fitting which can work with 1/2" tubing. This is a common size for most pump and would work well!

I am VERY interested in buying this UV unit. In doing my research first, I was wondering how often are you having to replace the bulb( not to the day, just a ballpark)?
Question by: Chris DeLaro on Jan 17, 2016, 3:44 AM
0
Great question!
For best performance you will want to replace the bulb once every 1-2 years to keep up with the proper amount. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Sorry I don't quite follow your question but this unit does have a body with a diameter of about 3.5"
