Caring for the animals and ensuring they arrive healthy is our top priority.

Learn more about Mr. Chili's Sustainability Alliance.

Mr. Chili Sustainability Alliance

Our Commitment to Creating a Better Tomorrow

You Can Feel Good About Your Pets with the Mr. Chili Sustainability Alliance Seal

Our goal is to provide a full range of animals from exceptional partners that share in the mission. Aquarists should have the opportunity to obtain animals that are captive-bred or aquacultured, come from facilities that have best-in-class husbandry practices, and the animals are independent of wild populations. To solidify our commitment, 2% of the net proceeds of all animals purchased on Bulk Reef Supply will be donated to organizations that are dedicated to coral conservation, like The Florida Aquarium.

This is our commitment to help ensure the future of the aquarium hobby as well as build on the synergy between hobby aquatics and the natural reef environment.

Mr. Chili Sustainability Alliance

All animals that receive the Badge of Certification:

1. Are Captive Bred and Raised:

  • We prioritize sourcing aquatic livestock that are captive-bred and/or raised in aquaculture facilities. These practices reduce the impact on wild populations, promote biodiversity, and support sustainable ecosystems.
  • We work exclusively with suppliers who adhere to high standards of captive breeding and coral aquaculture, ensuring that all aquatic animals are raised healthy and in acceptable conditions for animal well-being.

2. Are Healthy and Disease Free:

  • Ensure all animals undergo rigorous health checks before shipping to customers.
  • Partner with suppliers who follow strict biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of diseases.

3. Humane Treatment

  • Advocate for the humane treatment of all animals throughout their lifecycle.
  • Require suppliers to provide environments that meet the natural behavioral and physiological needs of the species.
  • Reject any practices that cause unnecessary stress, injury, or harm to animals.

4. Safe and Adequate Shipping:

  • Ensure that all shipping methods are safe and that the animals are shipped directly to you with exceptional care from our partners to minimize stress.
  • Use packaging materials that provide ample space and oxygen, sent by the fastest delivery methods available and only ship Monday through Thursday to minimize time in transit.
  • Work with shipping companies that have proven track records for handling live animals responsibly and humanely.

5. Supporting the Customers' Success with Support and Education:

  • Provide customers with accurate, comprehensive information on the care requirements of their new animals. This includes water quality, diet, tank mates, and habitat needs.
  • Offer ongoing support to customers, ensuring they have the resources and knowledge to maintain the health and well-being of their animals over the long term.
  • Ensure our customers are aware of acclimation best practices to ensure they best introduce their animals to their new environment.

6. You’re Part of Giving Back to Organizations Who Protect Aquatic Ecosystems With Us:

  • 2% of net proceeds of all animals purchased on Bulk Reef Supply will be donated to organizations that serve to protect and conserve coral conservation and other marine wildlife, like The Florida Aquarium.
  • Additionally, through a variety of programs, we proudly donate to these organizations throughout the year by providing them with the products they need to be successful in their research and restoration efforts and through monetary contributions.

The Aiptasia Eating Filefish (Acreichthys tomentosus) is a fascinating addition to a saltwater aquarium, especially for those dealing with pesky Aiptasia anemones. Known for its incredible camouflage and unique swimming style, this fish blends into its surroundings. While primarily kept for its natural ability to control Aiptasia outbreaks, it can also be a charming and peaceful tank inhabitant. However, caution is advised in reef tanks, as some individuals may nip at soft corals or other invertebrates.

Note: Image is a representation of what to expect. The fish you receive may vary slightly in appearance.

Aquarium Requirements

Aquarium Size

More space is always beneficial, but a minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended for an Aiptasia Eating Filefish. If keeping more than one, or housing with other tank mates, consider a larger aquarium to provide enough space for all inhabitants to establish territories.

Habitat Recommendations

Aiptasia Eating Filefish thrive in environments with plenty of hiding places and natural structures. Here’s how to create an ideal setup:

  • Aquascaping: Live rock formations provide excellent cover, security, and natural hunting grounds for filefish.
  • Substrate: No specific substrate is required, and they adapt well to sand, crushed coral, or bare-bottom setups.

Water Parameters

Maintaining stable water conditions is key for keeping a healthy Aiptasia Eating Filefish:

  • Temperature: 75-78°F
  • pH Level: 7.7 to 8.5
  • Salinity: 1.023-1.026 (30-35ppt)
  • Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate: Ammonia and nitrite should be undetectable, with nitrate levels kept below 20 ppm
  • Water Flow: Moderate flow is preferred to ensure oxygenation without excessive turbulence.

Diet

Aiptasia Eating Filefish are omnivores, primarily known for their appetite for Aiptasia anemones. However, they may require supplemental feeding once the Aiptasia population decreases.

Primary Diet

  • Frozen Food: Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood are excellent choices.
  • Pellet Food: Some individuals will accept high-quality marine pellets or flakes, but frozen options are generally preferred.
  • Live Food: Offering live blackworms or enriched brine shrimp can help encourage feeding in newly introduced fish.

Feeding Frequency: Feed 2-3 times daily in small portions. Since these fish are slow feeders, ensure they have enough time to consume food without competition from faster fish.

Compatibility

Aiptasia Eating Filefish are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tank mates. However, they may show occasional curiosity toward certain corals and invertebrates.

Common Tank Mates

  • Fish: Clownfish, Gobies, Blennies, Cardinalfish, most Wrasse, Firefish, Tangs, Dwarf Angelfish, and other peaceful fish.
  • Invertebrates: Some individuals may nip at shrimp, feather dusters, and small ornamental crustaceans.
  • Coral: Some filefish may be reef-safe, while others may nip at soft and fleshy corals. Monitor closely in a reef environment.

Behavioral Notes

  • Personality: Curious and intelligent, often engaging in slow, deliberate swimming patterns.
  • Camouflage: Can change coloration to blend with its surroundings, making it an expert at hiding.
  • Aiptasia Control: While effective at consuming Aiptasia, not all individuals will develop a taste for them immediately. Having a backup plan for Aiptasia removal is recommended.

Acclimation Process

Acclimation instructions are included in each box, but if you misplaced yours or want to know what to expect ahead of time, you can always find an extra copy here: Fish Acclimation Instructions
