Natural Benefits for your Aquarium Inhabitants

  • Natural Shelter and Food
  • Aesthetic Appeal
  • Natural Tannins Release

Lotus pods, like other botanicals, can be used as decorative and functional elements in an aquarium. Their unique appearance adds to the natural look of a biotope setup and can replicate the fallen seed pods often found in natural freshwater habitats.

Why Use Lotus Pods in Your Freshwater Aquarium?

Aesthetic Appeal: Lotus pods have a distinct and attractive appearance that can add a natural and unique look to an aquarium, especially in tanks replicating a specific biotope.

Natural Shelter: The structure of lotus pods, with its cavities, can offer small aquatic creatures, such as shrimp and small fish, places to hide and explore. This can be particularly beneficial for shy or breeding animals.

Surface for Biofilm Growth: As with many botanicals introduced into an aquarium, lotus pods can become a substrate for biofilm growth. Biofilm is a collection of microorganisms that grow on submerged surfaces. Many small aquatic creatures, especially shrimp, love grazing on biofilm as it's a natural food source.

Release of Tannins: While lotus pods may not release as many tannins as other botanicals like Catappa leaves or alder cones, they can still introduce some tannins into the water. Tannins can provide a natural tint to the water, simulate blackwater environments, and potentially offer some anti-bacterial and anti-fungal benefits.

Note: Like other botanicals, Lotus Pods will decompose over time. Decomposing pods can contribute to an increase in organic waste, which may necessitate more frequent water changes or maintenance. For that reason, It's recommended to replace the Lotus Pods occasionally.
