The Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum) is one of the most iconic surgeonfish in the marine aquarium hobby, prized for its striking violet body, bright yellow tail, and active personality. Native to the coral reefs of the Red Sea and western Gulf of Aden, these herbivores spend their days cruising reef slopes and rocky outcroppings, grazing on algae and patrolling established territories.

In the aquarium, Purple Tangs remain active throughout the day, constantly exploring the rockwork in search of algae to graze. Their intelligence and curious nature often make them one of the first fish to recognize their caretaker at feeding time. While generally peaceful with dissimilar species, they can become territorial toward other tangs, making aquarium size and thoughtful stocking order important considerations.

Why Choose a Captive-Bred Purple Tang?

These fully aquacultured Purple Tangs represent an exciting advancement in marine fishkeeping, giving hobbyists access to one of the hobby’s most iconic fish without relying on wild collection.

Raised in a biosecure aquaculture facility and accustomed to aquarium conditions and prepared foods from an early age, they offer hobbyists a more sustainable choice and a better opportunity for long-term success.

BRStv Care Guide - Purple Tang
Aquarium Requirements

Providing an environment that reflects the Purple Tang's natural habitat goes a long way toward long-term success. The Purple Tang requires a mature tank with open swimming room, frequent algae-based feeding, and thoughtful additions of tankmates.

Minimum Aquarium Size: 100+ Gallons, ideally 6 feet or longer.

A larger aquarium provides the uninterrupted swimming space these active fish require while also helping reduce territorial behavior.

Habitat Recommendations

Aquascape

Arrange live rock to create a balance between open swimming lanes and caves or overhangs for shelter. Avoid building a solid "wall" of rock that restricts movement across the aquarium.

Water Movement

Moderate to strong, turbulent flow helps recreate the oxygen-rich reef environment these fish naturally inhabit.

Water Parameters

While Purple Tangs are generally hardy, an established aquarium with stable water parameters will lead to a healthier, less stressed fish.

  • Temperature: 74-79°F
  • pH Level: 8.0 to 8.3
  • Salinity (Specific Gravity): 33-35 ppt (1.025-1.026)
  • Ammonia: Undetectable
  • Nitrite: Undetectable
  • Nitrate: Below 20 ppm
Diet

Purple Tangs are herbivores with digestive systems adapted to process marine algae and other plant-based foods. In the wild, they spend much of the day grazing rather than eating a few large meals, so providing frequent access to appropriate foods is important for their long-term health.

A varied, herbivore-focused diet supports healthy digestion, strong immune function, and vibrant coloration. Even if the tang readily eats mysis shrimp or other meaty foods offered to the rest of the aquarium, those foods should remain supplemental and should not replace marine algae in its diet.

Recommended Foods Include:

  • Dried Seaweed (Nori)
  • Herbivore Pellets
  • Spirulina-Based Flakes
  • Frozen Herbivore Blends

Offer algae sheets regularly and provide multiple small feedings throughout the day when possible. An automatic feeder can be helpful for dispensing small portions of herbivore-specific pellets between regular feedings.

At the hatchery, these captive-bred Purple Tangs are accustomed to eating prepared pellets and are also offered nori and other suitable foods during growout. Each fish will arrive with a sample packet of the food it is currently eating, allowing you to continue offering a familiar food while it adjusts to its new aquarium.

Temperament & Compatibility

Temperament: Semi-Aggressive

Purple Tangs generally coexist well with many dissimilar reef fish, including clownfish, wrasses, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, anthias, and many reef-safe angelfish. However, every fish has an individual personality, and Purple Tangs can become territorial, especially toward other tangs or fish with a similar body shape.

Aquarium size, stocking order, and the introduction process can all influence compatibility. When keeping multiple tangs, introducing them at the same time in a spacious aquarium may help reduce territorial disputes. When adding tangs individually, start with the smallest or least aggressive species and add larger or more assertive tangs later.

Consider using an in-tank acclimation box when introducing a new Purple Tang. This allows the fish and its tankmates to become familiar with one another before making direct contact. Feeding the established fish before the introduction may also help reduce competition and aggression.

Maintain strong water movement and good oxygenation during the introduction period. Keeping the aquarium near the lower end of the recommended temperature range may also support higher dissolved oxygen levels and help reduce stress.

Reef Compatibility

Reef Safe: Yes

Purple Tangs are considered reef safe and are excellent additions to larger reef tanks. They typically won't bother SPS, LPS, soft corals, clams, shrimp, crabs, or snails.

Their herbivorous feeding habits often benefit the corals in the aquarium by helping manage nuisance algae before it becomes problematic.

Acclimation & Arrival

Your captive-bred Purple Tang will arrive in a cardboard shipping box with an insulated Styrofoam cooler. Depending on the season, the package may include a heat pack or cold pack. You’ll also receive Fish Acclimation Instructions and a sticker with a QR code linking to those instructions.

Before opening the bag, turn off your aquarium lights to reduce stress and turn off your auto top off system. Keep the bag sealed and float it in the aquarium for 15 to 20 minutes. This allows the temperature inside the bag to equalize with the tank.

If your aquarium is within the recommended range and the fish doesn’t appear stressed, open the bag and gently net the tang into the display or into an acclimation box. Discard the shipping water (do not pour it into your aquarium).

Why We Love the Purple Tang

Few marine fish combine beauty, personality, and utility quite like the Purple Tang. Its bold coloration immediately draws attention, while its constant grazing behavior helps keep rockwork clean and algae in check. With adequate swimming space, a mature aquarium, and a diet rich in marine algae, the Purple Tang can become a long-lived centerpiece that rewards aquarists with decades of activity and vibrant color. As a fully aquacultured fish raised in a biosecure environment, it also represents the future of sustainable marine fishkeeping.
