  • 1000 g (approx. 2000 ml)

Why Use Carbon?

Activated carbon has been used in aquariums for decades to remove yellowing compounds, organic waste byproducts, and foul odors. These pollutants not only impact appearance but can also increase oxygen demand and fuel unwanted microorganisms. REEF-SPEC Carbon provides superior adsorption capacity for both small and large organic molecules, helping prevent these issues before they develop.

Should I Use a Media Bag or Reactor?

For best results, carbon should be used in a media reactor, which maximizes contact time and efficiency. Media bags can also be used, but they are less effective. If using a bag, place it in an area of strong water flow, such as a sump baffle or overflow chamber. Gently knead the bag weekly to move fresh carbon toward the outer surface.

Usage Guide

  • Routine Maintenance (Yellow Tint/Organics): 50 g (100 ml) per 200 L (50 gal) for 1-2 months in a moderately stocked aquarium.
  • Post-Medication Treatment: 100 g (200 ml) per 200 L (50 gal) for 1 week to remove medication residues.
  • Ozone Post-Treatment: 50 g per 50 mg/hr ozone injection, placed at the outlet of the ozone reactor or protein skimmer. Replace once the volume reduces by 50%.

Extra Tips for Use

  • Rinse thoroughly under tap water until clear before use.
  • Due to air trapped in the pores Carbon can float. You can soak the carbon in RO water until the air is released.
  • Recommended flow: 250-400 GPH per 50 g of carbon.
  • Replace carbon on a regular schedule. We suggest monthly.
