Details

Grow copepods and phytoplankton hassle-free using the PhytoTank CL System! This kit includes everything you need to maintain a self-sustaining copepod colony to feed your reef tank inhabitants. It includes two PhytoTank-L reactors: one for growing copepods and another for growing phytoplankton to feed your copepods. You can also use any excess phytoplankton to feed your corals!**

The kit features the PodNest-- a combined aerator and copepod habitat which results in significant copepod culture density. Also included is a large, 4 inch copepod sieve to help catch copepods.

The integrated LED light provides uniform lighting for maximum growth and eliminates the need for space-consuming banks of fluorescent lights. Cultures take place in disposable culture bags, and the PhytoTank`s durable rubber cap has bulkheads for disposable aeration and vent tubes, so you wont need to extensively clean or disinfect your PhytoTank between cultures. Simply throw out the disposable items and start your next culture!

Product Questions

Product Questions

What size is the included sieve and where can I get replacements and other sized sieves if sold?
Question by: Dan on Nov 6, 2025, 2:12 PM
The sieve included with the PhytoTank CL System has a 4-inch diameter. I would reach out to the manufacturer on any inquiries for replacement parts.
Answer by: Kristen Macdougall (BRS Staff) on Nov 7, 2025, 2:30 PM
How often must copepods and phytoplankton be harvested?
Question by: Esther on Aug 9, 2024, 3:24 PM
Once you have a good culture, you can harvest pods every other day. You can harvest phyto once a week, you will know it is ready when there is some foam on the top of the culture.
Answer by: Grace (BRS Staff) on Aug 15, 2024, 11:14 AM
How long do you need to wait between dosing fertilizer and adding phyto to your fish tank?
Question by: Michael Casaretto on Apr 5, 2024, 7:15 PM
It is suggested to wait at least an hour in between dosing each product.
Answer by: Scott F. (BRS Staff) on May 9, 2024, 10:51 AM
Can both of these units be used for phytoplankton? Or is there a conversion to turn the pods in to plankton?
Question by: Matthew Levitt on Mar 8, 2024, 2:54 PM
If the preference is to run both containers for just phytoplankton, that is fine.
Answer by: Scott F. (BRS Staff) on Apr 30, 2024, 12:30 PM
How many ML of the phyto fertilizer A and B do you put in at a time in both containers when starting? I haven’t been able to find any info on this!
Question by: Dan on Mar 30, 2023, 4:05 PM
2mL of A nad B to start, per the instructions:

Insert vent and aeration tubes into reactor lid
Clean your workspace, hands, reactor lid, and tubes with rubbing alcohol
Place one disposable culture bag into the PhytoTank, folding the bag over the threaded opening of the reactor body
Add freshly mixed saltwater to halfway point
Add 250 ml of starter culture (not included)
Add 2ml of Part A and 2 ml of Part B fertilizers
Install lid and tighten clamp
Attach supplied air hose with in line filter, then plug in power supply (an outlet timer set to a 16 hour light / 8 hour dark cycle is recommended)
Harvest phytoplankton after 7-10 days. Dispose of the plastic bag liner, vent, and aeration tubes.
Answer by: Scott F. (BRS Staff) on May 10, 2023, 4:46 PM
Hello,
I recommend dosing 1.5ml of each for every gallon of culture you are growing.
Answer by: Chad (BRS Staff) on May 11, 2023, 1:35 PM
If this is BRS Recommended.... Why isn't there an explanation or a video describing why its recommended? Honest question, Not trying to sound like a brat. Its just rather difficult to be willing to buy this when I can hardly find anything on it other than Poseidon Systems own website.
Question by: Theodore Grissom on Aug 18, 2022, 8:40 AM
Hi Theodore. Thank you for the recommendation. Our video team works hard to bring out as much content as they can produce and appreciate the recommendations provided, we will submit your suggestion for their consideration. Stay tuned.
Answer by: Christian (BRS Staff) on Aug 18, 2022, 6:16 PM
Is this actually self sustaining or do you have to feed them directly? I've never done this before. Does it take water from my tank or anything and use the nutrients in it to do that? Super interested!
Question by: Derrick Loughlin on Jul 6, 2022, 11:31 AM
Thanks for the question! It is hard to answer this as it is entirely self-sustaining. The systems don't need extra components, however, you will need to provide fertilizer to promote robust phytoplankton growth and then add some phytoplankton to the pod culture vessel to feed the copepods. Let us know if we can help with anything else!
Answer by: Kyle Thomas (BRS Staff) on Jul 8, 2022, 2:36 PM
Where can you buy the fertilizer that is included in the kit? Or suggest a replacement.

Question by: Bob on Jun 28, 2022, 7:06 PM
Hey Bob, thanks for the question! You can reach out to Poseidon Reef Systems - info@poseidonreefsystems.com and they should be able to provide you with this.
