Aqua Ultraviolet is one of the most popular options available and has been in the UV game for more than four decades creating UV sterilizers for use across multiple industries including aquaculture and food & beverage on the commercial side to aquariums and ponds for home use. They're simple in construction, well built, and they're made in the USA.

How UV Sterilizers Work

Ultraviolet sterilizers are a time-tested approach to water clarification and sterilization. They emit a germicidal UV-C ray that will alter the DNA or RNA of single celled organisms like algae, bacteria, and protozoa, rendering them unable to reproduce. The result is crystal clear water without the use of any chemicals. Using a UV sterilizer will not alter water chemistry.

Aqua Ultraviolet sterilizers include a clear-blue cap that lets you see when the lamp is powered on, without having to risk any exposure to the harmful UV-C rays. How effective the UV sterilizer is greatly depends on having the proper flow rate through the sterilizer body, so we highly suggest using a valve or a DC pump to control the flow through the UV sterilizer. For freshwater aquariums, AquaUV suggests 642 gallons per hour for the 8 Watt Classic UV Sterilizer.

Maintenance

Over time the efficiency of the sterilizer will start to diminish because the lamp is no longer putting out the same amount of energy, but also the quartz sleeve that houses the lamp can become coated with mineral deposits and start to become cloudy. We suggest cleaning the quartz sleeve a few times each year and replacing the UV lamp annually. This AquaUV Sterilizer includes quick-connect unions on the input and output allowing you to quickly remove the entire system from your aquariums plumbing for maintenance. With proper maintenance, your UV sterilizer will work like it did from day one.

Product Questions

Can I use this uv sterilizer hooked to a fluval 407 I don’t have a sump
Question by: Yaimi Sanchez on Jan 10, 2024, 8:46 PM
This could be hooked up to a canister filter, you would just need to find your own fittings and ensure that it is attached to the output of the filter to avoid damages to the UV.

What are the inlet and outlet sizes? The product picture is a slip union but the description is a barbed fitting.
Question by: Steve Randolph on May 11, 2022, 3:24 PM
The inlet and outlet sizes are 3/4" barb fittings.

Where does the water go in and where does it exit? The schematic should have this labeled. Are the inlets and outlets threaded?
Question by: Steve on Nov 26, 2021, 1:37 AM
The inlet and outlet are slip but the bushing is threaded. The water goes in closest to the top on the unit (closest to the bulb) and exits at the bottom.

Is there a recommended pump to use with this unit? Would I be better off plumbing it inline with my return pump?
Question by: lyle shaw on Mar 8, 2020, 8:43 PM
Hi there,

The sterilizer is small enough to be plumbed in off a manifold, just make sure you have sufficient GPH needed on your return pump.

Take care
