4 Stage Value Plus 75GPD RO/DI System

This System is Best For: City water treated with low levels of chlorine and well water with low levels of contaminants.

The 4 Stage Value Plus 75GPD RO/DI System gives hobbyists a simple, dependable way to make purified water at home. Instead of making trips to buy water at the grocery or local fish store, you can produce clean RO/DI water whenever you need it; no hauling buckets required. RO/DI water is essential for topping off evaporation and mixing fresh saltwater for water changes.

It removes common tap water contaminants and includes helpful upgrades that make the system easier to monitor and maintain. A built-in pressure gauge, manual flush flow restrictor, and dual inline TDS meter give you better visibility into system performance and water quality.

4 Stages of Filtration

Stage 1
Sediment Filter

Sediment Filter

Included Filter: 5 Micron Depth Sediment Filter

Removes larger particles such as dirt, rust, sand, and other debris from the incoming water supply. This first stage helps protect and extend the life of downstream filters like the RO membrane.

Stage 2
VOC Carbon Block

Carbon Block

Included Filter: BRS 5 Micron VOC Carbon Block

Removes chlorine and many organic compounds that may be present in tap water. This stage helps protect the RO membrane from damage while also reducing chemical contaminants.

Stage 3
75 GPD RO Membrane

RO Membrane

Included Filter: DOW Filmtec 75 GPD Membrane

Acts as the core filter of the system by removing the majority of dissolved contaminants (TDS) from the water. Under pressure, purified water passes through the membrane while impurities are rejected into a separate waste-water tube.

Stage 4
Deionization Resin

Deionization Resin

Included Filter: BRS Color Changing Mixed Bed DI Resin

Deionization resin is the final stage of the RODI system and will polish your water down to 0 TDS. The DI resin is a mixed bed with a color changing indicator to let you know when it is becoming depleted. The resin starts as a dark blue color that will turn gold when as it becomes exhausted.

Plus Model Benefits

Plus model features

This Plus version includes helpful pre-installed upgrades that make it easier to monitor water quality and maintain the RO membrane.

Glycerin Filled Pressure Gauge
Allows you to easily monitor incoming water pressure so you know the system is operating within the ideal range for optimal membrane performance.

Manual Flush Flow Restrictor
Lets you quickly flush the RO membrane, helping remove buildup and extend the life of the membrane.

Dual Inline TDS Meter
Continuously monitors total dissolved solids before and after the DI stage so you can easily confirm 0 TDS water quality.

No Plumbing Experience Required

Source water connections

Setting up a BRS RO/DI system is easy. If you can connect a garden hose to your spigot, you can install an RO system.
This system includes the following accessories to get you up and running quickly:

Garden Hose / Utility Sink Adapter
Connect your RO system directly to a standard garden hose or utility sink thread. This option is great for dedicated mixing stations, laundry rooms, garages, or outdoor use.

Faucet Diverter Valve
The faucet diverter valve allows you to temporarily connect the RO system to most kitchen or bathroom faucets. With the turn of a lever, you can switch between normal faucet use and supplying water to the RO system.

Faucet Adapters
Multiple faucet adapters are included to help fit a wide range of standard kitchen faucets. These adapters make it easy to attach the diverter valve securely so you can get up and running quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Really Need an RO/DI System?

If you're keeping a saltwater aquarium, RO/DI water is simply the best foundation to start with.

Tap and well water more often than not contains a whole host of unwanted contaminants and impurities that we simply don't want in our aquariums. Some will cause issues right away, while others silently build up over time.

By starting with the best water possible, we remove that variable from the equation entirely.

How Does an RO/DI System Work?

Reverse osmosis systems purify water by passing it through multiple filtration stages that each have specific roles in removing contaminants before the water reaches your storage container.

The star of the show is the RO membrane. Using your home's water pressure, purified water is pushed through the membrane while impurities are rejected into a separate waste-water tube.

Standard RO systems use three primary filtration stages to remove sediment, chemicals, and dissolved contaminants. RO/DI systems add a fourth stage of deionization resin that further purifies the water and acts as a final polish to ensure zero total dissolved solids (TDS).

How Many Stages Do I Need?

While water quality can vary wildly from one source to the next, we've come up with some good rules of thumb for when each system makes sense.

RO Only
Best For: When 0 TDS water isn't necessary

RO only systems remove low levels of chlorine and most contaminants to produce very clean water, but they don't include a DI stage to polish the water to 0 TDS. For saltwater and reef aquariums in particular, RO/DI systems are typically recommended.

4 Stage RO/DI
Best For: City water with low levels of chlorine or well water with low levels of contaminants

A simple and effective RO/DI system that removes sediment, low levels of chlorine, dissolved contaminants, and polishes the water to 0 TDS for reef aquariums.

5 Stage RO/DI
Best For: Nearly any city or well water, whether it's treated with chlorine or chloramines

Adds an additional carbon stage vs. the 4 stage system to help fully remove chloramines before the water reaches the RO membrane, protecting both the membrane and DI resin.

6 Stage RO/DI
Best For: Nearly any city or well water, plus hobbyists who want longer DI resin life

Includes an additional DI stage vs. the 5 stage system to help extend resin life and maintain consistent 0 TDS water production.

7 Stage RO/DI
Best For: Nearly any city or well water, plus maximum DI resin efficiency

Separates cation and anion DI resins before utilizing a final mixed-bed DI stage. This three DI stage approach allows you to replace only the resin type that has been exhausted.

What Makes BRS RO/DI Systems Better?

Bulk Reef Supply RO/DI systems are designed with aquarium hobbyists in mind and are built with proven filtration components. Every system is carefully assembled and tested right here in Golden Valley, Minnesota so we can maintain strict quality control over every system we produce.

Unlike many generic RO systems, BRS systems use high-quality components, including premium RO membranes, refillable DI cartridges, and industry-leading carbon blocks designed to protect the membrane and extend system life. Double O-ring push connect fittings help ensure a tight seal and reduce the chances of leaks for added peace of mind.

BRS systems are also designed to be easy to monitor and maintain. The "Plus" models have built-in features like pressure gauges, flush valves, and TDS meters help you quickly verify that the system is operating properly and producing pure water for your aquarium.

Finally, every BRS RO/DI system is backed by a limited lifetime warranty, extensive educational resources, and knowledgeable support. From installation guides to troubleshooting help, the BRS team is here to make sure your system continues producing clean, reliable water for years to come.

How Do I Know When to Replace the Filters?

Filter replacement depends on three main factors:

  • How much water you're producing
  • The quality of your source water
  • The types of contaminants in that water

Here are a few simple ways to know when each stage needs attention:

Sediment Filter
As the sediment filter begins to clog with debris like rust, sand, and dirt, the pressure entering the RO membrane will start to drop. If your system has a pressure gauge, it's time to replace the sediment filter when you start seeing a decrease in pressure. If your system doesn't have a gauge, we recommend proactively changing out your sediment filter every 6-12 months or so

Carbon Block
Carbon filters are harder to monitor directly, so they are usually replaced on a schedule. Most hobbyists change them every 6 to 12 months. If your water supply contains chloramines or you produce large amounts of RO/DI water, replacing them closer to every 6 months is recommended.

RO Membrane
The RO membrane typically lasts around 3 years when the sediment and carbon filters are replaced regularly. You can also monitor performance by comparing the TDS of the incoming water to the TDS after the membrane. Most membranes reject about 98% of dissolved solids. For example, if the incoming water measures 100 TDS, the water leaving the membrane should be close to 2 TDS.

DI Resin
This is the final stage that brings your water down to 0 TDS. If the water leaving the system reads above 0 TDS, the resin is exhausted and should be replaced. If you do not have a TDS meter, color-changing DI resin provides a visual indicator. Replace the resin just before the color change reaches the top of the cartridge.

Can I Install an RO System Outdoors?

You can install your RO or RO/DI system outdoors, but it should be in a covered location out of the elements. Avoid placing it in an area that receives direct sunlight as it can cause algae to grow inside the canisters. TDS meters on Plus models are NOT waterproof.

Note: Bring your RO system inside if temperatures will drop below freezing. If water inside the canisters is allowed to freeze, this will cause the canisters to burst.

What Can I Do with the Waste Water?

Waste water is a normal part of the RO filtration process, but if you're looking to put the water to good use, we often use it to water our plants!

What if My Home Water Pressure is Low?

Low water pressure won't damage the RO system, but it will reduce performance and result in lower than advertised daily water production. If your home's water pressure is low, consider adding a booster pump.

Learn More: How to Install a Booster Pump on an RO/DI System

Can I Use an RO/DI System for Drinking Water?

Yes, however we typically use RO filtration only for drinking water, not RO/DI. You'll want to install a tee fitting after the RO membrane and before the DI resin so you can switch between making RO/DI water for your aquarium and RO water for drinking.

If you're looking for an RO system exclusively for drinking water, check out our BRS Drinking Water RO Systems.

Is it Normal if the DI Canister Doesn't Completely Fill with Water?

Yes, this is completely normal.

Because water will flow through the DI cartridge from the bottom to the top, it's normal for some air to get trapped in the canister. This is normal and does not affect the quality of water being produced. In fact, air trapped in the DI stage is an indication of a good seal between the DI cartridge and the top of the canister housing.

Does this unit come with a automatic shut off installed
Question by: Theresa Fontana on May 23, 2025, 11:04 AM
Great question! This does come with an auto shut off valve installed.
Answer by: Emily B (BRS Staff) on May 23, 2025, 2:56 PM
I just replaced all the filtration media and the middle canister (carbon block) is leaking at a slow drip rate. It didn't leak before I took it off. Took it apart again and the O-ring looks secure and it's still leaking. I can't tighten it any further. Do you have any tips I can try to stop it? Is it OK to use Teflon tape on the threads?
Question by: Betsy on Apr 20, 2023, 2:06 PM
I would try replacement of the o-ring. I am guessing it got a small pinch in it somewhere. Here is a link below. Rather cheap part to start. Unlikely the canister has an issue but if it does we sell it and its sku# 200001

I have a water softener how does this affect the R/O system
Question by: Chu-e on Dec 19, 2022, 5:27 PM
Thanks for reaching out to us! The water softener will help remove some calcium, magnesium, and other hardness causing elements that will make the filters last longer for the RODI unit. Let us know if we can help with anything else!
Answer by: Kyle Thomas (BRS Staff) on Dec 20, 2022, 3:31 PM
Does this system come with the filtration media? Also, what is the waste to pure water ratio. How much water am I wasting to make one gallon of RODI water?
Question by: Shane on Jun 5, 2022, 5:05 PM
Thanks for the questions! All of our RODI units come with the first filters, membranes, and DI resin installed. This particular system with the right water pressure (65-70 PSI) and average TDS initially, should have a 3:1 ratio of waste to product (ie for every 1 gallon of water made, 3 gallons will be waste).
Answer by: Kyle Thomas (BRS Staff) on Jun 7, 2022, 11:19 AM

Answer by: Matt Lucero (BRS Staff) on Feb 15, 2022, 7:34 AM
How do you flush the system. I assume flush valve is open during normal operation.
Question by: Paul Blasi on Dec 15, 2021, 11:22 AM
Thank you for your question. To flush the system you open the flush valve so that the handle is parallel to the flush valve and let the system run for 5-10 minutes. When it is closed (in the perpendicular position) the flow restrictor is engaged and the system will produce filtered water.
Answer by: William Glenn (BRS Staff) on Dec 16, 2021, 1:38 PM
Where is the DI resin placed in this? it says 4 stage and i don't believe that is the resin area.
Question by: steve on Mar 13, 2018, 10:28 PM
Hi there,
Thank you for reaching out.
In the 4 stage system the filtration goes like this:
Sediment filter -> Carbon Block -> RO Membrane -> DI Resin
The DI resin is located in the 3rd canister on the bottom of the bracket.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
Have a great day!
Answer by: William Glenn on Mar 16, 2018, 2:22 PM
Does this unit come with the float valve or do i buy it separately?
Question by: Alex Cheshmejiev on May 21, 2017, 11:38 AM
Hey there,
The 4 Stage Value and Plus unit do not include the float valve, so this would need to be purchased separately.

Have a great day!
Answer by: Zack on May 23, 2017, 3:17 PM
A few things. Just got this up and running, the unit is making a hissing type sound but not leaking. I can't tell what way is off for the flush kit ball valve (what way I should have it when running) cause when it is inline it doesn't make a sound but when it is perpendicular it has a 40psi pressure (double inline).
Question by: Sean Fennig on May 2, 2017, 5:56 PM
Hey there,
It's not unusual to hear a bit of noise through the unit when it's got water running through it, but this can be much more noticeable when the unit is first started as this comes from little bits of air trapped in the unit. As the unit wears in, much of these air bubbles will get purged from the system and the noise will quiet down. If you are getting a lot of noise initially, moving the unit around a bit, even laying it on its side and tapping it can help to release some of this air and allow it to pass through the system. If you have further questions about your system, please feel free to contact our free customer support by phone or email.
